Wissenswertes zur Feuerwehr

Was ist die Feuerwehr?

There are three types of Fire Brigade in Lower Saxony: Voluntary Fire Brigades, Professional Fire Brigades and Works Fire Brigades. Works Fire Brigades are set up by businesses and public services which have an increased risk of fire or other danger. They are primarily responsible for their own premises. Towns and villages are required to set up an efficient and capable fire brigade. In Niedersachsen the majority of these are Voluntary Fire Brigades – the men and women involved take on the various responsibilities of the Brigade as volunteers, in addition to their other commitments. Eleven larger towns in Lower Saxony additionally have a Professional Fire Brigade – in this case firefighting and the other responsibilities of the force are their full time employment.

Was macht die Feuerwehr?

Starting with rescue from fire, floods and road accidents through to rescuing people who have fallen into icy waters, today the Fire Brigade’s most important undertaking is to rescue people and animals from any type of dangerous situation.

The Fire Brigades in Lower Saxony are fully trained and equipped, enabling them to do their best to help people and animals in need at any time.

The original reason for forming the Fire Brigade was to put out fires, still an important feature of our work today, although in many cases water is no longer used, having been replaced by other substances.

During 2011 the Fire Brigade in Lower Saxony extinguished over 23,000 fires of all sizes.

Regardless of whether the fire was in a waste paper bin or a large factory: the Fire Brigade was on the scene to fight the danger.

Another complex area of focus for the Fire Brigade is that of the recovery of assets. This could be a load shed from a lorry or a load which needs salvaging after an accident. Trees and telephone or electricity lines which have come down during storms, as well as submerged cars, belong to this category.

The Fire Brigade is not only active in matters such as flood defences, it is also involved in other preventative measures to avoid dangers from arising. Examples would be: warning children of the dangers of fire and being present at large events, such as concerts.

Was zeichnet die Freiwillige Feuerwehr sonst noch aus?

The work undertaken by the Fire Brigade is real teamwork. Especially in the Voluntary Fire Brigade the sense of community spirit plays a large role. Within this community there are many opportunities to contribute, responsibilities to take on and interesting courses to take. Examples of which are: Equipment Attendants who ensure the care and functionality of the equipment, Youth Trainers who take care of the training of the next generation Fire Brigade, and the specialists and executive staff. These are (as well as others) Group or Section Leaders and Local Fire Chiefs.
